Ant-Man: Wright, Pegg & Frost talk superheroes

Britain's favourite triple act Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have had a little chinwag on the subject of Wright's upcoming Marvel movie 'Ant-Man,' and how it will stand apart from the director's filmography thus far.

The trio spoke to SFX in the magazine's recent special edition on superhero movies. Whilst Frost and Pegg are not involved in 'Ant-Man,' they too had plenty to say on Marvel movies and comic books in general.

Praising Marvel movies, Wright said, "I think they do stand alone… I think that's what's kind of clever about the movies, is that they work sort of like the comic books. They're standalone stories, and there are elements that link them. But I think that's what makes 'The Avengers' the treat that it is - it's bringing six disparate characters together."
The director acknowledged how 'Ant-Man' is likely to push him out of his comfort zone.
"'Shaun' [of the Dead] and 'Hot Fuzz' and 'The World's End' are all R-rated films. I like the challenge of making a PG-13 film. Because you've got to entertain in a different way. You don't have the same tools. It's also different in terms of 'Scott Pilgrim [versus the World].' They're both adaptations…
"It's one of the reasons I didn't want to do 'Ant-Man' straight away and that I wanted to do 'The World's End' [first]. It was important to me that me and Simon do a purely original screenplay as our next movie. But it's nice to have the opportunity to mix it up."

You may recall the storm in a teacup which whipped up earlier this year when Pegg had the audacity to tweet a photograph of himself pointing at a picture of Ant-Man, leading some to believe he was declaring himself to have been cast in the lead. This, of course, was not the case, and Pegg talks a bit about why he doesn't think he should play the part.
"If I was Edgar, I wouldn't cast me… he obviously has to spread his wings as a director and be seen not to just come with me as a package. Same with Nick [Frost]. We need to do things separately so we don't ultimately get seen as coming as a double act."
Still, Pegg admitted the movie "would be enormous fun to be in… if Edgar asked me, I'd think about it," but until we hear otherwise we'll still assume the #1 contender for the role in Paul Rudd.

Frost, meanwhile, doesn't fancy his chances of landing a superhero role.
"But which character would I be on screen? I don't think there are many superheroes who are big men, essentially. Who do we have? I think my choices are really nil. I think Ben Grimm or the Rhino
... Alright, I'm going to be Ben Grimm."
Now everyone, let's not get carried away this time… Frost is speaking extremely casually here, so this doesn't mean he'll actually be The Thing in Josh Trank's 'The Fantastic Four.' Though, honestly, I could see him in the role… see also sandler-named-most-overpaid-actorlaura-dern-cast-in-drama-99-homebayona-to-direct-world-war-z-sequel.
