Avatar: James Cameron confirms Avatar scripts nearly done

COMMENT | With James Cameron having confirmed that three 'Avatar sequels' will definitely be coming in the next few years, and that he intends to release the first of the movies in 2016, fans of the franchise want to know one thing only; what can they expect to see in the three sequels?
Obviously a key part of this is the scripts for the remaining 'Avatar' movies, and the writing process for these scripts has been a source of intrigue, given the fact that we're not sure if they are being compiled solely by James Cameron, after he drafted in a screenwriter to assist in this mammoth task. But after Cameron gave some short interviews when the official announcement of the 'Avatar' sequels were made, we're now in a much stronger position to know what is going on with the scripts for the 'Avatar' sequels.
Firstly, Cameron started that the scripts for all of the three 'Avatar' sequels "will be done soon", which obviously means that they are not complete as had been suggested previously. It seems likely, though, that at least a first draft has been created.
However, Cameron's comments also made it clear that this has not been the solitary process that we perhaps presumed it would be. In retrospect, the job of writing three entire screenplays in a relatively short period of time is certainly a massive one, and it's perhaps not hugely surprising that the director hasn't taken this task on alone, in fact far from it.
Cameron spoke of having "opened the process up to other screenwriters" and forming a team which has been working on the 'Avatar' sequels. So it looks as if there will be a lot of input from other individuals than Cameron with regard to the final product. He stated with regard to this process that it had been enjoyable and productive, and he considered after this round table process that "we know we've got killer stories and great characters", which bodes well for the remaining 'Avatar' films.
Another interesting titbit of news to come out of the Cameron interviews was that the decision had been taken by the director to bring in designers, so that the art department for the movies is working in parallel with the writing, so one informs and inspires the other. Cameron sounded incredibly confident about where the 'Avatar' movies were creatively, and it will be interesting to see whether this confidence was well founded, even if we have to wait three years in order to do so!
