Hunger Games: Catching Fire - 2nd highest grossing US film

COMMENT | It has been a spectacularly successful year for the 'Hunger Games' series, and as 2013 draws to a close there has been yet more good news for everyone involved in the 'Hunger Games' series, as the latest box office figures for 'Hunger Games: Catching Fire' are released.
With the film having been out on general release for several weeks now, the news about its box office takings has dried up somewhat, as the inevitable process of newer movies taking over the spotlight unfolds. However, with Christmas on the horizon, 'Hunger Games: Catching Fire' has achieved a particular milestone which has lead to the media turning their attention to the second movie in the 'Hunger Games' quadrilogy once again.
Although 'Hunger Games: Catching Fire' has now fallen out of the top five for the weekend box office, the performance of the film over the weekend was enough to ensure that it becaem the second highest grossing film of 2013 in the United States. 'Hunger Games: Catching Fire' has now eaked in over $371.7 million at the US box office, which places is second in the 2013 list to only 'Iron Man 3'.
With taking of over $8 million over the weekend, 'Hunger Games: Catching Fire' sneaked past 'Despicable Me 2' into second place on the list, with the animated movie having made just over $367 million in the US.
In terms of its worldwide performance, 'Hunger Games: Catching Fire' is currently the fourth highest grossing movie of the year, but it looks set to sneak into the top three by the end of the calendar year.
'Hunger Games: Catching Fire' has already taken over $765 million at the worldwide box office, but figures for this week indicate that it will probably break through the $800 million barrier soon. This would place it behind only the two aforementioned movies on the worldwide list for the year, and put it well on the way to achieving its ultimate goal of making $1 billion at the box office. Even if its falls just short of this target, there is no doubt that 'Hunger Games: Catching Fire' has been a huge commercial success, which bodes well for the remaining 'Mockingjay' movies.
